John Nicholson

John Nicholson was born in Westmoreland, England, April 10, 1831, being the third child of a family of seven. At an early age he united with the Episcopal Church in England. When he was fourteen years old he was apprenticed for a term of years to the miller's trade, at the expiration of which time, in 1855, he came to America and located at Lowell, La Salle County, Illinois, where for a period of thirty years he conducted a flouring mill. He was very successful in his business undertakings, for when he came to America his chief assets consisted of youth and ambition, but through thrift and industry he succeeded in accumulating a comfortable fortune. For a number of years he was a member of the board of supervisors, representing the township of Vermillion.

In September 1863, he was united in marriage with Martha Huss, who died August 1,1901. Three children blessed this union, Alvin W., Margaret and Harriet. Mr. Nicholson was married to Frances L Stoffer in October, 1903. He died July 8, 1906 aged 75 years, 2 months, and 28 days.

Of his immediate family he leaves to mourn his loss, besides his widow, one son, Alvin W., who resides in Lowell; two daughter, Mrs. Margaret Huston, of Deer Park, and Mrs. Harriet Dodd, of Artesian, S.D.; one brother, William, and a sister Mrs. Joseph Warner, both of whom live in Lowell.
